As the UK death toll approaches 1,500, the arguments between those who claimed that COVID-19 is “just like flu” and those who took it more seriously are falling quiet. Even for those with their head still stuck firmly in the sand, it is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore the noise of Italy and Spain on the tracks ahead.

The Spanish philosopher George Santanyana wrote, “those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

By invoking Santanyana, I could be referencing the 1918 flu pandemic that killed around 50 million people—possibly as many as 100 million—and infected a third of the world’s population. Instead I am referring to the harsh lessons learned by China and Italy in the very recent past. By looking back in time, the UK can choose which of those pasts it is going to repeat.

My girlfriend Katie and I are currently locked down on the Spanish island of Mallorca, watching from afar as the COVID-19 crisis unfolds in the UK.

I have now studied a great deal of credible information about the Coronavirus situation in Europe and have become convinced that people in the UK are dangerously misinformed.
